August Break 2012 – Day 30

August Break 2012 – Day 30

Yesterday, we spent some time documenting Monkeyboy Jr’s art camp experience. (It’s easier to keep only the best-of-the-best this way.)

This was one of my favourite photos from the series. What a complete goofball. 😉

With the littlest away at dayhome for the afternoon, I figured it would be the perfect time to break out this:

Way back in March, the Beavers (wee Scouts) built rockets at a meeting one night. However. The rockets were just for show – no engines, no guides for launching, nothing… MBJ was sorely disappointed. Who wouldn’t be?! So, I decided to remedy the situation by picking up a “proper” model rocket at a local hobby shop.

MBJ’s been patiently waiting for just the right day to work on it. And by patiently, I mean pestering-ly. 😉 He was so excited when I told him that today was “the day”, that I had to continually rein him in and remind him to follow the instructions…

I did a lot of the tricky stuff – like cutting slits with the craft-knife and doing the precise measuring, but I had him help out where he could do so easily. Let me tell you though, the “watched pot” has nothing on “drying glue”…

After a brief hiccup (wherein the light on the safety switch wasn’t working, and Daddy came to the rescue with his voltage metre to say that the ignition pad WAS in fact operational), we were off to the park.

Hmm… I guess nothing about fire hazards means a green light, right?

5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

BLAST OFF!

Success!!!

Everything looked just fine on the rocket, so we got it ready for a second launch.

And then a third!

Which wasn’t quite as successful. But. A little readjusting of the connections and we got it going in no time.

Naturally, this called for a little air guitar riff with the launch pad.

What a brilliantly fun afternoon! I haven’t seen MBJ that excited about something non-computer/technology-related in quite a long time. It was very, very good.

We decided to celebrate our success with…

Pizza. Yes. Summer rocks.
