August Break 2011 – Day 13
Well, I went out into the garden for a really good look-see this morning, and I’ve got to say, I was rather disheartened. The excessively wet weather and two afternoons of hail have done some noticeable damage this year. I put together some “Last Year VS. This Year” diptychs to give you some idea of what I’m talking about…
The potatoes…
The beets…
The zucchini…
The carrots…
The leeks…
And the apples. Not to mention the peas, strawberries, and flowers…
The one thing that has seemed to thrive – thanks to the sheltered corner they’re in, I’m thinking…
…is the raspberries. Ah well, what can you do? I’m just hoping that there’s enough leaf surface area left to get some decent produce out of it all. =/
And now, for some distraction. I planted some flowers in a temporary bed by the shelter of the garage this year. This morning, the delphiniums looked especially pretty…
Schwooped up in Picnik. Anyhow. I hope your gardens are doing better than mine and that you are having a swell weekend too. 😉

That’s quite a difference between last year and this year Kate!
Our flowers have taken quite a beating a few times this summer due to heavy rains and hail. Mostly the poppies 🙁
I absolutely LOVE the last shot here. Really beautiful!
Happy Sunday to you!
I was thinking about you the entire time I was playing with it, Lisa. 😉
Awww. Not the beets!! But I suppose you will have lots of raspberry pies and jam to look forward to?
Mostly I’m just stuffing my face with them… and trying to foist them on the kids. Though, the idea of freezer jam “like my grandma used to make” sounds good… You know how to make freezer jam? 😉
I’ve only made it once with my sister, but this recipe sounds similar. It was only fruit, pectin, and lots of sugar (though in my family we always halved the sugar in pies and other things like this). http://www.canadianliving.com/food/summer_fresh_raspberry_freezer_jam.php
Hmm… I shall have to look into this I think. =)
