Custom Cover Ups
A while back, my friend Roger asked if I might build him a custom BBQ cover for his custom-made, kick-arse BBQ. Intrigued at the prospect, I asked him to send me some pictures of the BBQ and specs for it.
After researching and discussing various options (canvas, vinyl, pre-made approximations, etc.), we decided to go with some water resistant outdoor fabric… which may have to be made more waterproof with something like Scotchguard, or a plastic liner, or something like that.
As luck would have it, the fabric was on sale for half the price – which was a good thing, as we needed several metres of it.
Next, I set up a “mock BBQ” using the kitchen islands, some foam-core, and the biggest pots I could find. Then I planned out in my head how I thought the thing should be put together…
… and I just started cutting and sewing (I left the design a bit “baggy” for ease of covering/removal). Thank goodness for my Serger!
After finalizing some measurements, the “dome” was added… along with a special touch, using a fabric scrap: the “Rocking R”… which makes a lot of sense if you know Roger. 😉
I ended up changing some of the pleating, and tacking in an extra layer of fabric under the “Rocking R” (so that all the sewing points wouldn’t leak a ton of water), and… Viola!
I snuck by today and tried it on… Although the dome looks a little baggy to me, it all went on and came off quite easily. I will have to wait and see what Roger thinks. It’s easy enough to take the cover “in” a bit if we need to…
So, yeah. Just thought I’d try and get back on the blogging track with my latest project. Well, that is… if you’re not including the garden… whew!!! Anyhow. Hope y’all have a great weekend! I think it may be time to fire up our own BBQ now. Yum-yum! 😉
