Serenity Stones

Last year, I “got my crochet on” and set about making my very first “rock cozy”.

Since then, I’ve been experimenting on-again, off-again with the technique – mostly in the cooler months, snuggled by the fire, ahhhh… With the Christmas craft fairs coming up, I’ve once again dug out my granny glasses and gotten to work, and I thought I’d share some of the results. Not all of them, mind you, as my 3-year-old loves them and has apparently pilfered a few from my collection over the last several months – they are likely in the bottom of one of the various toy boxes, but I don’t have it in me to go on a giant hunt right now. 😉 Here are the ones I could find, though…

So. The first design I came up with reminded me a bit of a sea star (i.e. star fish), and as I love all things oceany, I decided to focus there for a while. As you can see, I had varying results. I’m afraid that the fanciful sea stars (at right) make me much happier than the more natural-looking ones (at left)… but maybe that’s just me?

And then I experimented with some heart and flower designs (most of which have gone missing, but you get the idea)…

I makeup the designs as I go, and it isn’t until a rock is actually finished and wrapped snugly that you can tell whether or not it’s a “success”. Sometimes, I’ll finish one and decide that it’s just “wrong” somehow, and then I’ll unravel it to start all over. I kinda like the “recyclability” of it, though. Most recently I tried the whole “ombre” shading thing…

… which I think is kind of growing on me.

Anyhow. I’m still not sure where they’re heading exactly (though I seem to be gravitating towards the whole “shabby chic” colour scheme). Or even how much I would charge for one at a sale (is $20 too much… for a hockey-puck-sized fancy rock???) But for some reason, I really like them. And I love making them, all cozied up in the Laz-y-boy rocker…

The beautiful thing is that it’s also an easily transportable craft – I can just toss my gear into my bag and head out the door.

Which will totally come in handy, as I’m heading out of town this weekend to visit a dear friend. As she herself has kids, I’m sure I’ll have a bit of time to myself to fill… so, yay. Anyhow.
